Layout variation overview
This chapter provides guidelines for logo placement, title, graphic element, and photography. These steps can be used as a starting point to develop new communication items.
Overview
The layout is based on a split frame system.
These systems can be applied to every format:
- Horizontal Layout
- Socials Layouts on 1:1 and 9:16
- Vertical Layout
Margin and grids
For each layout, we apply a page margin.
The page margin is 4% of the length of the short side of the layout.
The XD Connects logo and titles are placed within the page margin.
Example (220mm x 290mm)
Length of the short side = 220 mm
4% of 220 mm = 8,8 mm
The page margin = 8,8 mm
The layout is based on a grid of 10 blocks, with each block at 10%.
Horizontal layout
Horizontal Grid
The horizontal layout is based on a horizontal grid of 10 blocks, with each block of 10%.
Horizontal example
It is possible to split the layout in different ways to house different types of photography:
50:50
60:40 | 40:60
30:70 | 70:30
It is not allowed to split the layout in:
20:80 | 80:20
10:90 | 90:10
The headlines should always be in the middle of the layout.
Vertical layout
Vertical grid
The vertical layout is based on a vertical grid of 10 blocks, with each block at 10%.
Vertical example
It is possible to split the layout in different ways to house different types of photography and color blocks:
50:50
60:40 | 40:60
30:70 | 70:30
It is not allowed to split the layout in:
20:80 | 80:20
10:90 | 90:10
The typography can be placed on the top according to the grid, on the bottom, and in the middle.
Spread pages layout
For more technical touchpoints like the spread pages of the catalog, it is possible to use the same system to
build out the structure for the layout.
The layout is divided into 10 blocks, each with a value of 10%. In this case, the blocks assist in building the reading hierarchy:
- 30% for the headline,
- 20% for the subhead, and
- 50% for the photos.
Since this is a catalog, the inside margin should be bigger to correspond with the 8% of the short side of the layout.
Social Layouts
1:1 and 9:16 grids
For social media formats of 1:1 and 9:16, it is only possible to split the layout with 50:50; otherwise, the content will be too small to be comprehensible.
